CELSTRAN® Long Fibre Compounds

Producer: Celanese
Polymer type LFC

Celstran® is a long-fibre-reinforced thermoplastic (LFT) made by Celanese.

Celstran® LFT grades are produced in a special patented pultrusion process. The fibre incorporated in this process can be glass, carbon, aramid or stainless steel. Almost all partially crystalline and amorphous thermoplastics are suitable as thermoplastic matrix materials.

General info

Celstran® LFT offers

Long fibre materials have substantially better mechanical properties than comparable short-fibre-reinforced thermoplastics. The long-fibre-reinforced thermoplastics are thus suitable for the manufacture of parts that are subject to high mechanical stress, even at elevated temperatures, and for products that have been made of cast metals or thermosets.

Compared with corresponding short-fibre-reinforced materials is Celstran®;

  • Markedly higher mechanical properties
  • Higher notched impact strength
  • Reduced creep tendency
  • Very good stability at elevated temperatures in humid conditions
  • Often reduced tendency to warpage

Typical Celstran® applications

The most important field of application at present for Celstran® is the automotive sector. For example, gear levers and sunroof drainage channels are made from it because of the mechanical stress imposed on them. Parts near the engine such as fan shrouds, engine noise deadening casings or the housings for electronic engine control systems also have to withstand additional temperature stress.

Celstran® is also seen in front ends (PP GF40), battery trays (PP GF40), levers for electrical cabinets (PA66 GF50), mirror brackets and housing (PP GF50) and tilt trays (PP GF40).

Portfolio

The range of Celstran® products comprises a number of possible matrix-fibre combinations. They are intended for injection moulding, extrusion and blow moulding and produce moulded parts with markedly greater fibre lengths than conventional short-fibre-reinforced plastics.

The most common matrix systems are:

  • Polypropylene, PP
  • High-density polyethylene, HDPE
  • Polyamide, PA6; PA66; PA12
  • Polyacetal, POM (Hostaform®)
  • Polyphenyle sulphide, PPS (Fortron®)
  • Thermoplastic polyurethane, TPU
  • Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymers, ABS

The following reinforcing fibres are available:

  • Glass
  • Carbon
  • Aramid
  • Stainless steel filaments

The percentage of the reinforcement can differ, and often grades with 30%, 40% and 50% filler content are available. A very common grade often used for automotive structural parts is Celstran® PP GF30-04, an LFT material with a PP matrix and 30% glass fibre filling.
